Spain’s New Vaping Rules: An Update for Holidaymakers

by UKVS Staff 15 Apr 2024

The holiday season is just around the corner, and for vapers, it’s more important than ever to be informed about where you can and can’t vape. With more countries adopting strict anti-smoking and vaping rules, ignorance could lead to hefty fines if you’re caught. Spain remains one of the most popular holiday destinations for UK holidaymakers and has introduced recent changes to smoking and vaping laws.

This week, the Spanish government approved a new anti-smoking plan which includes a crackdown on vaping. The new measures were outlined by Spain’s Health Ministry in a 3-year plan that covers all of the 17 Spanish regions. The plans include a number of recommendations to change current smoking laws for citizens and tourists, including;

  • A sharp increase in tobacco taxes
  • Expanding the number of places where smoking is banned
  • Putting vapers on the same level as conventional smokers

One controversial aspect of the new plans is to end the sale of flavoured vapes, following the lead of eight other European countries that have passed laws prohibiting vape flavours: Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Hungary, Lithuania, the Netherlands, Slovenia and Ukraine. If you are heading to Spain this summer, note that vaping is banned in all indoor state-owned public places, on public transport, and in certain outdoor places, including some beaches. 28 beaches in the Balearic Islands and all 10 beaches in Barcelone are vape and smoke-free, with fines of up to 2,000 Euros if caught breaking the rules.

As a vaper, it is your responsibility to be fully informed about the vaping laws and regulations in the country you’re visiting. Laws change regularly as countries try to crack down on underage vaping and counterfeit vape sales, so it really does pay to be informed.
